Listen! Its History! The Music of the Past. - AHC 1857
Appleton, Wisconsin was founded as a city in 1857. It was incorperated in 1853.
The main reason for Appleton's founding was due to a man named Amos A. Lawrence from Boston, Massachusetts.
A. A. Lawrence offered the Methodist Church in Wisconsin a matching donation of $10,000 dollars for opening a school. His offer would only be good if all the money could be matched.
Upon the founding of Lawrence Institute in 1847, the land around it was named after Amos Lawrence's wife Sarah Elizabeth Appleton. But later, Amos Lawrence told Sarah's old cousin Samuel that the city was named after him in the hopes that he would donate money to the college. Mr. Samuel Appleton was a rich merchant from Boston and had opened mills in Lowell, MA and in other cities. The story worked well enough that Samuel later contributed $10,000 dollars for a library at Lawrence University.
This began what became our rich and interesting history over the next 150 years in Appleton, Wisconsin.
